Adolescent Substance Abuse Program

Provides substance abuse treatment services to youth and adolescents in Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Leslie, Owsley, Perry, and Wolfe Counties, as well as Buckhorn Children & Family Services.

What We Do

ASAP provides substance abuse treatment services to youth and adolescents in Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Leslie, Owsley, Perry, and Wolfe Counties, as well as Buckhorn Children & Family Services.

Our program provides education and program referral information to the community, conducts initial screenings to help determine if there is need for treatment using the GAIN (Global Appraisal of Individual Needs) - an evidence-based assessment used to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning, facilitates individual and group outpatient therapy, and provides substance abuse treatment for alcohol or illicit drug use.

ASAP follows the evidence-based Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA), which is a developmentally-appropriate treatment for youth with substance use disorders that seeks to increase the family, social, and educational/vocational reinforcers to support recovery. Anyone can make a referral to our program (self- referral, DCBS, physicians, Health Department, etc.).

How do you know there is a problem?

The CRAFFT is a screening tool recommended by the Committee on Substance Abuse for use with adolescents. It consists of a series of 6 questions developed to screen adolescents for high risk alcohol and other drug use disorders simultaneously.
Have you ever ridden in a CAR driven by someone (including yourself) who was "high" or had been using alcohol or drugs?

What We Do

Our Program provides substance abuse treatment services to young people in Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Leslie, Owsley, Perry, and Wolfe Counties as well as Buckhorn Children & Family Services.

Initial Screening

We conduct initial screening to help determine if there is need for treatment using the GAIN. The Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN) is an evidence based assessment used to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning.

Outpatient Therapy

We facilitate individual and group outpatient therapy.

Substance Abuse Treatment

We provide substance abuse treatment for alcohol or illicit drug use.

What We Offer

One positive model we use to treat youth substance abuse is the Seven Challenges treatment model. Seven Challenges shows the most promising results in motivating kids to change their behaviors. The Seven Challenges is listed as an evidence-based program in the SAMHSA National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.

A-CRA

We also follow the evidence-based Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach. A-CRA is a developmentally-appropriate treatment for youth with substance use disorders. A-CRA seeks to increase the family, social, and educational/vocational reinforcers to support recovery. Practicing new skills during sessions is a critical component of the skills training used in A-CRA. Every session ends with a mutually-agreed upon homework assignment to practice skills learned during sessions. Often these homework assignments include participation in prosocial activities.
